Many cases have been settled out of court for thousands of dollars. In 2003 these groups began a campaign against file-sharing web sites and services, and launched a series of large-scale lawsuits against individual file-sharers. These include the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Content owners, such as the recording industry, movie studios, and game and software companies, have always aggressively protected their copyrights. File-sharers face potentially serious legal and financial consequences for violating copyright law through peer-to-peer networks, including lawsuits and other civil and criminal penalties.
